One of my customers had a problem on his Power System (P7) and needed to access the console using an IBM 3153 terminal. We don’t see a lot of this old stuffs (1990s) because many people are using HMC or USB/Serial(RS232) adapter on their computer/laptop.
But sometimes, it could be very useful and by default, the parameters are not always appropriated to use with Power System/pSeries and you could get some strange characters on the screen when connecting the terminal to the serial port of your system.
To access setup menu and edit teminal configuration, you have to use one of the following a sequence keys :
- CONTROL + –
- CONTROL + Scroll Lock / Print Line
In the “Quick Menu†F1, it is possible to set all needed parameters, set them as follows :
- EMulation = VT100
- Baud Rate = 19200
- Data Format = 8/1/N
Save your choice when exiting : ESC.
And that’s all, after this short setup, system console is available for use
.
